History of Laxmi Vilas Palace

Laxmi Vilas, still inhabited by the royal family of Vadodara, was constructed in the 19th century in the Indo-Saracenic style at a whopping cost of Rs 6 million. The vast estate covers 500 acres, making it the largest private residence ever built and four times the size of Buckingham Palace. As the most impressive Raj-era palace in Gujarat, Laxmi Vilas boasts intricate mosaics, chandeliers, and artwork, along with an impressive collection of weaponry and art.

Commissioned by the then Maharaja of Baroda, famous artist Raja Ravi Verma’s paintings decorate the palace’s lavish interiors. Surrounded by expansive park-like grounds, Laxmi Vilas features a golf course and Navlakhi stepwell that sheds light on ancient water resource systems designed by kings to combat Gujarat’s parched lands.
